Connecticut House Fire Claims The Life Of Seven-Year-Old Boy

Posted on October 24, 2011 by Keith

October 24, 2011

A tragic house fire in a Bridgeport, Connecticut, neighborhood has claimed the life of a seven-year-old boy. According to Channel 8 News, the fire broke out in a three-story home on Highland Avenue just after 5:00 this morning.

Officials say the fire began in the boy’s bedroom, but are unsure of what may have started the fire. Investigators said the residents who live in the downstairs of the home knew the boy was trapped in the upper part of the home and attempted to rescue him, but were pushed out by flames and smoke, and exited the house safely. The boy’s grandmother and mother got to the scene shortly after and stated the home was engulfed when they arrived. Unfortunately, by the time firefighters made it to the scene, it was too late.

Officials say details on how the fire started will be released upon the completion of their investigation into the fire.

According to statistics gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) one person dies in a house fire every 169 minutes.

The Connecticut Fire and Burn Injury Attorneys with Carter Mario Injury Lawyers would like to take this opportunity to remind homeowners that the best way to protect the lives and the live of their loved ones from a fire is to ensure smoke detectors are installed and working in every room of your home.

Breast Cancer Research Uncovers New Findings In Connecticut

Posted on October 17, 2011 by Keith

October 17, 2011

New statistics on breast cancer rates in each state show that Connecticut ranks second in the nation for the disease. According to NBC-Connecticut, a report being released later today will list cities and towns with high mortality and late-stage rates across the state.

The findings were released in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in the 2011 Community Profile of Breast Cancer in Connecticut. Despite a high number on incidence in the state, researchers found that Connecticut ranks 35 in the nation for Breast Cancer mortality rates. 84.1 percent of female residents have had a mammogram in the last two years, compared to an average of 74 percent throughout the rest of the nation.

Researchers also found that African-American women living in urban areas and Hispanic women in manufacturing areas are the least likely to catch the disease early through mammograms.

Other researchers in the field have discovered that the drug Tamoxifen increases survival rates in patients. Doctors say that use of the drug over a ten-year period can increase survival rates by 2 percent. Dr. Robyn Young, one of the researchers, says, “If you are talking about a million women worldwide, saving the lives of two percent of those women is huge.”

The Connecticut Medical Malpractice Attorneys at Carter Mario Injury Lawyers would like to urge women to have regular mammograms and do self-exams in order to protect themselves from life-threatening Breast Cancer.

Two Yale Students Rescued From East Rock Ledge

Posted on October 10, 2011 by Keith

October 10, 2011

Two Yale students received a charge of reckless endangerment last Thursday after rescue crews were called in to pull them off a ledge on East Rock near New Haven, Connecticut–injuring three firefighters in the process.

NBC-Connecticut reports the pair, a 19-year-old female freshman and a 21-year-old male junior at the university, were free climbing the face when they became stuck on a ledge and called 911 for rescue. Firefighters and police responded to the scene at 3:45 in the afternoon and began the steep descent of the rock while attached to ropes.

While climbing down, a Lieutenant with the fire department lost his footing and fell. The slip caused him to receive a compound fracture to his leg. Another firefighter, dangling from ropes below, was hit in the head by falling rocks from the first fireman’s fall. A third rescuer was taken to the hospital as a precaution for injuries sustained in the slide.

The Students were eventually pulled off the rock’s face safely at around 5:00 PM, and were charged with reckless endangerment for climbing on the rocks. The act is against a town ordinance not to do so, and therefore, made the pair liable for their rescuers injuries.

The Connecticut Slip And Fall Attorneys with Carter Mario Injury Lawyers want your opinion. Should the pair be held responsible for the injuries their rescuers received, or is it just a risk of the job? Feel free to post your responses to our Facebook page.

Stricter Teen Driving Laws Responsible For Safer Teen Driving

Posted on October 3, 2011 by Keith

October 3, 2011

Officials with the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are happy to report that three years after major changes were made to state law in order place greater restrictions on teen drivers, improvements are being seen in numerous areas of teen driver safety.

According to a news release the laws are targeted at Connecticut’s youngest and most inexperienced drivers, and restrict the number of passengers they can carry, extend training requirement times, and require attendance to a parent-teen information seminar about safe driving habits.

The newest DMV report stated a 28 percent decrease in the total number of crashes involving 16 and 17-year-old drivers, and a reduction in the number of fatal crashes in the same age category. A reduction in the number of convictions for distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence was also reported.

DMV Commissioner Melody A. Currey lauded the campaign’s success by saying, “These numbers demonstrate improvement we like to see, but there’s always more work to do in this area of educating teens about safe driving.”

The Connecticut Car Accident Attorneys with Carter Mario Injury Lawyers pride themselves on encouraging teens to be vigilant in safety practices behind the wheel. The firm is committed to their annual Arrive Alive Scholarship that emphasizes teen education against distracted driving.

State Trooper Struck By Intoxicated Driver While Performing A Traffic Stop

Posted on September 26, 2011 by Keith

September 26, 2011

Being a law enforcement officer means having to daily expect danger around every corner. One Connecticut State trooper found this out the hard way when he was hit by a drunk driver while on duty Sunday.

NBC News Connecticut reported the trooper was conducting a traffic stop with a vehicle in the northbound lanes of I-95 early Sunday morning. The officer was standing next to the stopped vehicle, talking with the driver, when from out of nowhere, an intoxicated driver swerved onto the shoulder of the road and struck his cruiser from the backside. The police car then smashed into the back of the stopped vehicle and also struck the trooper. All three vehicles were severely damaged and all three involved were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment to injuries sustained in the crash.

Although the intoxicated woman has been charged in connection with the crash, no details surrounding those charges have been released due to the ongoing investigation into the accident.

The Connecticut Auto Accident Attorneys with Carter Mario Injury Lawyers ask that you respect the space of officers when they have a vehicle stopped on the side of the road by slowing down and getting over to the left lane if you can. This simple action reduces the number of accidents with officers involved and can help save the lives of our everyday heroes.

Groom Killed on Wedding Day in ATV Accident

Posted on September 19, 2011 by Keith
September 19, 2011

Imagine the range of emotions a bride must go through when she marries and loses the man she loves in the same day. One family member described it as a “living nightmare” for a bride who lost her groom on their wedding day to an ATV accident. According to NBC-Connecticut, the accident happened in Dover Plains, New York on Saturday night, just hours after their wedding.

The 25-year-old groom was the passenger on the vehicle driven by his brother. Authorities say the brother had too much to drink and struck a tree while driving the ATV. The collision caused the vehicle to overturn and pinned the young groom beneath it. Rescue crews were able to transport the man to New Milford Hospital, but it was too late. he was declared dead upon arrival from trauma to the head, chest, and abdomen. The brother was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, and has subsequently been charged for driving intoxicated.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that 376 deaths were attributed to ATV crashes in 2009; a much lower number than in the previous decade. The government claims better safety education is to thank for the decline.

The Connecticut Personal Injury Attorneys with Carter Mario Injury Lawyers support and encourage those individuals who utilize ATVs for work or recreation to always protect themselves by wearing a helmet. This precaution significantly reduces your chances of being injured or killed in the case of an accident.

Two Connecticut Teens Killed In Rollover Car Crash

Posted on September 12, 2011 by Keith

September 12, 2011

Two teenagers from Killingly, Connecticut, are dead following an early morning crash Saturday. NBC-Connecticut reported the boys crashed just after 1:00 in the morning on Route 44 in Eastford, just before the Pomfret border.

The boys were driving along the dark road when police say the 18-year-old driver of a 2005 Suzuki Forenza sedan lost control of the vehicle. The car skidded out of control before striking a tree and eventually rolling into a swamp. First responders from numerous units, including the Eastford and Pomfret Fire Departments, rushed to the scene, but were unable to resuscitate the young men by the time they arrived. By the time the sun set at the scene of the crash the same day, a crowd had gathered to pay respects to the young men and flowers were placed at the crash site.

Police are still investigating what may have caused the crash.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration says that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for those between the ages of 15 and 20-years-old, and 2 of every 3 teenagers killed in a crash are male.

A man has been charged after hitting and killing a 17-year-old boy in East Haven, Connecticut. According to NBC-Connecticut, the driver was drunk when he hit the boy while crossing Coe Avenue just after 9:00 PM on Friday.

The 51-year-old driver was driving his Dodge Ram pickup truck when he hit the boy who was crossing the street with a friend. The driver initially fled the scene of the accident and driving to his home down the street. He later returned to the scene and surrendered to officers who said he appeared to be intoxicated. Johnson Memorial Hospital Closed Due To Power Outage

Posted on August 29, 2011 by Keith

August 29, 2011

Medical care may be a little more difficult for some Connecticut residents to get to after the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, had to shut its doors and evacuate patients. According to Eyewitness News 3, the hospital’s closing is due to a power outage and generator failure following Hurricane Irene sweeping through the area over the weekend.

The evacuation occurred Sunday after heavy winds and storms knocked power out across the area. The Hospital’s back-up generator would not start and it was not long before staff knew patients’ care would be compromised.

Staff moved a total of 43 patients to other facilities in the area so they could receive the care they need. Hospital staff are asking those seeking medical help to go elsewhere and are diverting ambulances to other area hospitals. The emergency room and obstetrics unit at Johnson Memorial remain open in case a patient did not hear of the closing and arrives in desperate need of care.

The Connecticut Medical Malpractice Attorneys with Carter Mario Injury Lawyers salute the doctors and healthcare staff helping those in need in the aftermath of Irene, but they also know how easy it can be in the wake of a disaster for a patient to receive negligent care. If you feel you have been harmed because a doctor acted carelessly in their diagnosis of your illness or injury, contact the team of medical malpractice attorneys with Cater Mario for a free consultation of your case.

Children Falling From Windows At An Alarming Rate

Posted on August 22, 2011 by Keith

August 22, 2011

According to a new study by the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, an alarming number of children are hurt in falls from windows every year. In the study released online today and in the September 2011 issue of Pediatrics, it was stated that 5,000 children a year, or 14 children per day, fall from windows.

The study used data culminated from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) used by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to gather information on product-related injuries resulting in hospital visits. Findings showed that toddlers between the ages of newborn and 4-years-old had the highest percentage of falls accounting for 65 percent of all injuries reported for the study. They also had the highest rate of hospitalization and death amongst the age groups evaluated. Also, more that 190 children fall from a window every year after climbing onto furniture to gain access.

Doctors and researchers offered several tips to prevent a child’s injury from a window fall:

  • Install Window Stops and Locks. These allow windows to only open four inches.
  • Don’t Rely On Screens-.They will not prevent a child from falling.
  • Move Furniture Away From Windows. This will deter accidents.
  • Soften The Blow. Plant bushes and flowerbeds under windows to ease the fall in case of an accident.

The Connecticut Slip and Fall Attorneys with Carter Mario Injury Lawyers may be able to help you if your child has been injured by a fall from a window. Contact them to discuss your case confidentially with a qualified attorney.
