Helmets for Kids Program

Carter Mario Injury Lawyers in the Community

As an avid cyclist himself, Carter Mario understands the dangers of being involved in a bicycle accident. Carter Mario Injury Lawyers is concerned with the safety of children everywhere especially when riding a bicycle. According to the CDC, "more than 500,000 children go to hospital emergency rooms or doctors' offices due to bicycle injuries" each year. So as the “safety lawyers,” the firm wants to help educate parents and their children on the importance of wearing a helmet for another year of safe riding and fun!

This year Carter Mario Injury Lawyers is making youth helmets available free of charge (while supplies last)* through the firm’s community outreach program “Carter Cares.” Helmets can be picked up at any Carter Mario Injury Lawyers office statewide, in Bridgeport, Hartford, Milford, New Britain, and Waterbury.

We appreciate the continued support from local businesses and organizations. Click here to read a letter from Elm City Cycling and here to read a letter from Hamden Youth Services Bureau.

Helmet Safety Tips:

  • Start children wearing helmets with their first tricycles or play vehicles.
  • Use foam pads inside to fit the helmet snugly so it doesn't move on the head.
  • Fit the helmet so the front is just above the top of the eyebrows.
  • Teach your child to wear a helmet so that it covers the upper part of the forehead and sits level on the head.
  • Adjust the two side straps so they meet in a "V" right under each ear.
  • Adjust the chin strap snugly under the chin.
  • Make it tight enough so the helmet pulls down when the child opens his mouth.
  • Check often to make sure straps stay snug and the helmet stays level on the head.

In addition to the safety factor, it’s also a law. Connecticut Senate bill #597 requires:

“No child FIFTEEN years of age OR UNDER shall operate a bicycle on the traveled portion of any highway unless such child is wearing protective headgear which conforms to the minimum specifications established by the American National Standards Institute or the Snell Memorial Foundation's Standard for Protective Headgear for Use in Bicycling. Failure to comply with this section shall not be a violation or an offense. Failure to wear protective headgear as required by this subsection shall not be considered to be contributory negligence on the part of the parent or the child nor shall such failure be admissible in any civil action.”

*Disclaimer: Helmets are free 2 per household (maximum). Additional helmets can be purchased at a reduced price of $5.00 per helmet. Child must also be present to have helmet properly fitted by staff.
