No one wants or plans to get hurt at work, but it happens. Too often, people choose not to do anything immediately because they value their job and they are concerned about getting fired or creating tension with their boss. Later, if they do decide they want to do something, it's often too late because they didn't do these few things at the time of the injury to secure their claim.
Ten things to do:
- Report it! Immediately tell your supervisor and HR department.
- Seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
- Tell your doctor exactly what happened. ( i.e. If you fell off a ladder, tell them. If you are not clear, the doctor may forget to include that in his hospital report and that hurts your claim).
- Do NOT talk about your injury or claim at work with your fellow workers.
- Keep a daily journal that includes the following:
- What hurts and how you are feeling day to day.
- What daily activities are you missing out on? ( i.e. tennis, golf, riding bike, etc.)
- Names, addresses and dates of all doctors and medical treatment you have.
- Notes on any phone calls from insurance agents, employers, doctors, etc.
- If your doctor writes you a “no work/restricted work” scrip, give it to your employer.
- Do Not give a recorded statement to the Worker’s Compensation insurance carrier.
- Do Not sign a medical record release authorization form.
- File a 30-C. This legal notice signifies that you have sustained an injury arising out of and in the course of your employment, and makes a claim for compensation to your employer.
- If you receive a denial for treatment or benefits, call an experienced attorney who handles worker’s comp.
