Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe This Halloween

/

With Halloween only a few days away, we at Carter Mario Injury Lawyers wanted to take a moment to remind parents of some important tips to keep your kids safe. Unfortunately, emergency room visits increase significantly on Halloween night for a variety of reasons, ranging from car accident injuries and trip and fall injuries to poisonings from glow sticks or severe allergic reactions from novelty makeup. If you have children who will be trick-or-treating this year, safety is, of course, your top priority, so please review the tips below to ensure that your trick-or-treater enjoys a fun and safe Halloween.

  • Help your child choose a Halloween costume that fits well, is comfortable, is made with non-flammable materials, and does not cause a tripping hazard. Exercise good judgment when it comes to costumes with masks and props to ensure that they don’t pose a safety hazard.
  • Increase your child’s visibility as they trick-or-treat at night by adding glow sticks and/or reflective tape to their costumes. Just make sure that your kids know not to ever put glow sticks in their mouths!
  • Chaperone young trick-or-treaters to ensure that they stay on the sidewalk and do not dart out into the street. Use crosswalks where they are available, look both ways before entering the street, and always yield to oncoming traffic – never assume that a driver can see you and will stop for you.
  • Test novelty makeup on a small area of your child’s arm or leg before applying makeup to their face. Many novelty makeup products contain ingredients that could cause a severe rash or other allergic reaction.
  • Ensure that jack-o-lanterns are placed in an area where they won’t be tripped over on your property. In order to avoid creating a fire hazard, use battery-operated lights instead of lit candles.
  • Use only tools specifically designed for pumpkin carving. Never leave children unattended while carving pumpkins.

We wish you, your friends, and your family a Happy Halloween!
