The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued citations in the amount of more than $6,000 to a Connecticut company for their part in a workplace accident that left an employee seriously injured.
According to an article published in The Connecticut Post, the victim was part of a crew using a skip hoist to move concrete at the New Milford Block and Supply Corp. facility in February. While moving the blocks of concrete, the victim’s hand became entangled in a wire rope and eight of his fingers were severed.
OSHA immediately launched an investigation and found the company responsible for committing three “serious” safety violations, including not having a safeguard in place to cover the exposed wire rope that was responsible for causing the victim’s amputation.
The company was originally fined approximately $10,000, but the number was lowered in a settlement that was reached between OSHA officials and the company.
