According to an article from Business Insider, a report from the BLS shows that the most common work injuries are back injuries from overexertion which results in strains, tears, and sprains. Proper lifting technique is extremely important when lifting all objects, not just very large and heavy ones. Although most people know to lift with the legs and not back, there are many important things to remember when lifting objects.
Before lifting any object it is important to plan ahead. Make sure you know where you are going and the easiest path to go without making too many awkward movements. If there is anything blocking the most direct path be sure to clear it so you remove the risk of tripping or walking into something. Now you can prepare to lift, lift, and move the object safely.
-Stand as close as possible to the object, keeping the object as close to your body as possible ensures a more balanced movement.
-Feet should be about shoulder with apart. When walking forward be sure to take shorter steps rather than long strides.
-When squatting to lift the object do just that, squat. Do NOT bend over. Bend at the knees and hips while keeping the back straight and shoulders back. If necessary, do a practice squat before actually lifting the object.
-When standing with the object, do so slowly so as not to make any jerking motions that could cause strain.
-While walking, keep hips and shoulders aligned and tighten all core muscles; this will help to keep the body in proper lifting form.
-Make sure to not lift the object above shoulder level, this could cause unnecessary strain.
-When setting the object down, do so by squatting again, NOT bending over.
Remember, if you are experiencing trouble while lifting ask someone around who can help you lift the object. Also, if there are multiple objects taking multiple trips is always the safer choice.
