Beers, Wines Test Positive for Active Ingredient in Roundup Weed Killer

A recent report issued by the United States Public Research Group (USPIRG) Education Fund has discovered trace amounts of glyphosate in popular brands of beer and wine. Glyphosate is the active ingredient found in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer. An article detailing the group’s findings is available here.

The public-advocacy group tested fourteen brands of beer, five brands of wine, and one hard cider. Their findings indicate trace levels of glyphosate in nearly everyone—including three out of four brands labeled organic. Testing revealed concentrations ranging from 5.2 Parts Per Billion (PPB) to 51 Parts Per Billion.

What’s Considered a “Safe” Level of Glyphosate?

Even though the levels detected do not exceed the tolerances established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), at least one scientific study suggests that a glyphosate concentration as low as one Part Per Trillion (PPT) could potentially stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells or disrupt the human endocrine system.

An Established Risk

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicates glyphosate—the active ingredient in Roundup—is safe to use per directions. In contrast, California included glyphosate on a list of known human carcinogens in 2015. The World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer has also classified glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen.”

Last year, a jury in California State Superior Court awarded a former groundskeeper $289 million in damages—following his claim that heavy exposure to Roundup caused his Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The jury also noted Monsanto should have included warnings against this potential health hazard on the product’s label.

Currently, Monsanto and parent company Bayer AG are facing lawsuits from more than 11,200 people. These lawsuits allege exposure to Roundup can cause Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Monsanto consistently denies any link between their product and the development of cancer.
