According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), May is recognized as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. While motorcycles provide an enjoyable means of transportation for millions of Americans, two local accidents remind the team at Carter Mario Law Firm and our readers that riding is not without risk.
About the Accidents
State Police say the first crash took place on Route 32 in Willington. They report a motorcycle operator lost control while passing a vehicle, veered off to the shoulder, struck a guardrail, and fell. The unidentified motorcyclist was transported to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries.
In a later incident, two people have suffered serious injuries as a result of a motorcycle accident on Interstate 91 in Meriden. The incident took place on the southbound side near exit 18 and closed the westbound Interstate 691 ramp to I-91 for a time. Both crashes are under investigation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), helmets saved the lives of 1,859 motorcyclists during potentially fatal collisions in 2016. They also indicate the lack of a proper helmet contributed to more than 800 fatalities that same year.
The Motorcycle Legal Foundation suggests full protection requires more than just a helmet. The right protective clothing should always be correctly sized and properly fitted to the rider. In addition to a helmet, they suggest riders wear:
- Motorcycle Boots
- Riding Pants
- Riding Jacket
- Riding Gloves
- Eye Protection
