Thanksgiving is a special time to celebrate with family and loved ones, but as one of the busiest travel days of the year, it can also be dangerous. According to AAA, more than 55 million people will be taking to the roads and skies this Thanksgiving, traveling a minimum of 50 miles, an increase of 1.6 million people compared to 2018.
To make matters worse, 35 percent of fatalities that occurred during the 2017 Thanksgiving holiday period (Wednesday evening through Sunday night) involved an alcohol-impaired driver. This was higher than the 29 percent average for all of 2017. Needless to say, there is the risk of sharing the road with many drivers who are intoxicated.
What if You Suspect Someone is Driving Drunk?
If you notice a driver exhibiting any of the following behaviors, he or she may be intoxicated:
- Sudden, abrupt turns
- Straddling two lanes
- Erratic acceleration and braking
- Slowing or swerving
- Driving on the wrong side of the road
- Failure to observe traffic lights
- Stopping in traffic inappropriately
If you suspect that a driver is under the influence, it is important that you maintain a safe distance and call 911. Let the operator know that you are reporting a drunk driver and provide them with details as specific as possible:
- Exact location with names of streets
- Direction vehicle was headed
- Make, model, and/or color of vehicle
- Description of driver
It is extremely helpful if you are able to get the license plate number. Since you do not have to self-identify when reporting a suspected drunk driver, there is no reason not to. These simple actions can help to save someone’s life.
