Between cell phones, social media, texting, and GPS, there are many ways a driver can become distracted behind the wheel. Because of the seriousness of distracted driving, the Milford Police Department in Connecticut recently executed one of its high visibility enforcement campaigns.
U Drive. U Text. U Pay.
State and local law enforcement joined forces with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from Aug. 1 to 15 for the national U Drive. U Text. U Pay. campaign. The campaign, which is intended to catch distracted drivers and enforce related laws, was a success with a total of 98 violations issued by the Milford Police Department. Violations were given to those found to be texting, talking on the phone, or using a handheld mobile device while driving.
According to the Department of Transportation, this past April, during the first part of the campaign, more than 10,000 citations were issued to motorists who “chose to ignore Connecticut’s distracted driving laws,” Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Transportation, Joseph Giulietti, said. “Too many drivers are ignoring their responsibilities behind the wheel.”
Distracted Driving on the Rise Throughout the Nation
Unfortunately, the prevalence of distracted driving isn’t isolated to Connecticut. Over the past decade, the entire nation has seen an increase in the number of distracted drivers, leading to an increase in both crashes and fatalities.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, between 2012 and 2017, nearly 20,000 people died in crashes involving a distracted driver. Since 2015, nearly 33,000 crashes in Connecticut have involved a distraction – resulting in 45 fatal crashes. Fines in Connecticut for distracted drivers are $150 for the first incident, $300 for the second, and $500 per any offense after that.
