Emergencies can happen at any moment, especially when you are on the road. From fast moving weather changes to an unexpected breakdown, being out on the open road can be dangerous. Most people only plan emergency kits for very long trips, if they plan one at all. However there are some items you should have in your car at all times in case of emergencies.

  • Car charger for your cell phone: Even though you shouldn’t use your phone while driving, you should always have it with you in case of an emergency. This may come in handy especially when stranded for long periods of time.
  • Jumper Cable: This is probably the most obvious one, but many people don’t have them in their car. It is always helpful to have a pair of jumper cables in your trunk in case you need a boost.
  • First-aid kit: A small kit with necessities for a range of wounds. Some examples are Band-Aids, burn cream, large bandages, gauze, medical tape etc.
  • Car jack and lug wrench: Most vehicles come standard with these tools and you can check to find where they are located in the owner’s manual.
  • Disposable camera: This is something everyone should keep right in their glove compartment. Although most people have smart phones, it is always helpful to take pictures if you get into an accident with a real camera in case your technology fails or phone dies.
  • Hazard triangle (or warning light/flares): This is especially important for night time emergencies. Warning lights need batteries so your best bet is most likely to keep a couple hazard triangles in your trunk to warn oncoming traffic of your presence.
  • Flashlight: Simple idea yet another one many people forget about. Just buy a small flashlight to keep in your car in case of nighttime emergencies or when you need to see into your engine.

Although there are many additional items that would be helpful to keep in your car, the list above is a good place to start. If you are interested in more ideas you can search online or just prepare based on the season’s needs. Emergencies can happen anytime, be prepared!
