Pool Safety Tips

When the heat wave comes blitzing through town in the summer, there is hardly a better way to beat the heat than jumping in the pool. Something about that cool water leaves you feeling refreshed and satisfied. However, being around a pool can be dangerous, especially if you have young children with you. We have some pool safety tips to help you stay cool in the safest way possible.

Do not leave children unattended

Many accidents that involve pools and children result from adults not being present at the time of the accident. Drowning is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14, according to the CDC. Leaving children unattended, even for a moment, can have serious consequences.

Learn and practice water safety

This may seem like an obvious one, but nearly half of America can't swim, according to a 2014 survey by the American Red Cross. Teaching your children how to swim and being proficient at CPR can help you both prevent emergency situations and prepare you in case one does occur.

Make sure to have safety equipment for your pool

Have safety equipment such as a fence and gate can cut down dramatically on the chance of an accident occurring. It is recommended that you install a fence that is at least 4 feet tall and uses self-closing and self-latching gates. Installing an alarm to alert you of anyone going near the pool is another safety measure that can help prevent a disaster.

Keep your pool clean

Keeping your pool clean can help prevent allergic reactions, diseases and rashes from developing. While these are not necessarily emergency situations, practicing proper pool cleanliness can help make your time spent at the pool more enjoyable.

We here at Carter Mario are certainly not immune to beating the heat at the pool. If you follow these safety tips, we think that your summer at the pool will be all the more enjoyable too!
