Getting into a car accident is a scary situation and it is easy for someone to simply become frustrated or panicked. However, if you are in an accident where you are not seriously injured it is important to keep in mind these following tips.

  • First and most important, STAY CALM. These situations can be as small as a fender bender or as big as totaling your car, but it is important you remain calm so you can make smart and safe decisions.
  • Check for injuries. Assess any injuries you, or your passenger(s) may have acquired.
  • Do not leave the scene. If you are directly in the way of traffic you should move your car if possible. If you are unable to move your car, place your hazard lights on and warning signs around your car. If there is time take pictures of the scene before you move your car.
  • Call the police/911. Make sure to let them know of any injuries or critical conditions.
  • Gather any documentation/vital information needed from the other driver (e.g. other driver’s insurance information).
  • Take pictures of the accident. If you were not able to take pictures before, make sure you get documentation of how the accident happened and the results. Take pictures from multiple angels and distances.
  • Identify any witnesses and make sure to get their name, address and phone number. Many times witnesses do not remain at the scene or do not give information to the police.
  • Do not discuss the accident with anyone other than the police officer(s). It can be difficult to think clearly after an accident and you do not want anything said used against you at a later date.
  • Call your insurance company and give them any information they need regarding the accident. This could be especially important if the other driver does not have car insurance.

Accidents are not a simple situation to handle, but if you follow these steps you will be able to stay safe and gather all information to make your next steps easier.
