According to a new study by the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, an alarming number of children are hurt in falls from windows every year. In the study released online today and in the September 2011 issue of Pediatrics, it was stated that 5,000 children a year, or 14 children per day, fall from windows.
The study used data culminated from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) used by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to gather information on product-related injuries resulting in hospital visits. Findings showed that toddlers between the ages of newborn and 4-years-old had the highest percentage of falls accounting for 65 percent of all injuries reported for the study. They also had the highest rate of hospitalization and death amongst the age groups evaluated. Also, more than 190 children fall from a window every year after climbing onto furniture to gain access.
